My Diving and Underwater Photography
I have been interested in photography since my teenage years. I
like many of my age, I would be mesmerised and enthralled watching Jacques Cousteau on
the TV exploring the underwater-world of the oceans around the World, thus the seed was sown,
I knew one day I’d learn to dive. In 1999 I realised my dream as I started to learn to dive
with my local diving club.
Today I am a BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) Dive Leader, and Club
Instructor, as well as a trained oxygen administrator for diving related incidents. Soon
after qualifying as a BSAC Sports Diver I had the opportunity of going to the Red Sea for a
Live-Aboard diving holiday, at that time it was the opportunity of a lifetime and I wanted to bring
back my memories with me. It was time to bring my experience of photography to a new level, it was
time for a underwater camera.
I am a trained mechanical and aeronautical engineer by profession,
when you want to push the technical limits of the currently available equipment you are
left with one choice – make it yourself, you will see that’s what I did with a couple of
pieces of my photographic equipment. Underwater photography is a
fast moving environment when new ideas coming to the fore quite quickly, it’s all about
problem solving, with the advent of digital cameras it was inevitable that this was the
way to go, - this was the way I went.
Digital cameras have reduced the learning curve so much, that with
a modest outlay today any diver who wants to undertake Underwater Photography can do so. The
main goal with any good image is to achieve good composition and lighting, without either the
photo is flat and unappealing. I hope that my experience with "topside" photography
has allowed my images to have life and appeal, and show the underwater world that I am privileged
to visit to it's best advantage.
My Underwater Photography is a passion that I enjoy, and I hope you enjoy seeing some of my
best images in the galleries sections.
